Update time!

I don't write in this nearly as often as I like. (Well, other than the random stuff I post every so often.) So, here is an update on what I'm doing lately.

I start Viz in August/September, but I have a prerequisite course I'm taking summer session 2. I'm not quite looking forward to that as its a difficult math course and I'm not one for math. It's one of those things (like history) that I find interesting but doesn't stick in my head. It just sort of leeks out slowly like a bad car tire. Mostly because I don't use it on a regular basis so my brain tends to leak and purge it to make room for stuff I do use. (Kinda like it does with the English language. The more Japanese I learn, the worse I get with English. Oi.)

Still looking for a graduate assistantship. I finally got off my ass and looked on Jobs for Aggies. I thought it'd take a while to set things up on it and find assistantship sand sort through ones I might be eligible for. Hah! Not a chance. There were THREE available. THREE. One was in ocean drilling (a research one)- yeah, so not qualified or interested in that one. One was for computer work and had the benefits I wanted and the pay enough to make me leave Fosters- but I wasn't qualified for it. And the last had no benefits and the pay was less than I'm getting now. So I'm out of luck for the time being. I can't say I'm sad, though. I LOVE my current job and am very reluctant to leave it- hence why it's taken me so long to get my act together and check JFA. The only reason I'm looking is because most assistantships not only pay fairly well, but they come with a tuition bonus. They pay your graduate tuition as long as you work for them. Thats the only thing that'd make me leave my current job for an assistantship. Oh well.

Jarvis (my new computer) is working excellently now. I replaced the stock CPU cooler and installed it correctly this time and now the heat problem it had before is next to non-existent. The second CD/DVD drive I added works now as well. So save for a few minor things hew working fine. ^^ *dance dance dance* Now to play around on Portal and Photoshop. I'm itching to put the Intuos tablet I got to good use!

McGuyver again

So, I appear to be really rooting for being nicknamed McGuyver officially. Not on purpose, though. --*

Story:
I'm lucky I was up watching anime with Uzochi at bumfuck 1:30 am or else I might have more of a mess than I already do. around 1-1:15 I hear raining- INSIDE THE APARTMENT. It's been pouring -outside- for a few hrs (complete with a very nice lightshow ^^ I love lightning) but hearing rain inside is not good, and it was a lot of rain. I ran to the kitchen pulling out a pan as I went (because, thanks to my old old appt at Villa West I'm well acquainted with the sound of inside leaks) and shoved it under the kitchen vent on top of the stove where a nice thin steady bead was dripping down on it. Pull up chair to stand on and get better look. There were three leaks in total: one dripping down through my cabinets (I got a smaller pan to catch this), one dripping from the base connection to the hood, and one out the cabinet OVER the hood and starting to pool onto the vent hood. The one at the hood base was leaking worse. I then proceeded to do this little bit of jerry-rigging:

The saran wrap in the cupboard under the blue shop towel acts as a moisture barrier (I don't feel like dealing with warped rotted wood later) and the towel is right under two drips coming from the metal duct that goes to the hood. I pulled the towel around at an angle so it met up with the large streams coming from the base of the hood. Voila! Water wicking system. The towel wicks the water up from the drips up top and from the stream at the base of the hood and using gravity pulls it to the base of the towel and down straight into the pan. The electrical tape holds the towel in place (and is water resistant ^^.) I can't fix the hole in the roof thats causing all this mess but I can at least contain it into a bucket and keep it from screwing up the wood cabinets in the process. Now at least I can get some sleep and not worry about it till tomorrow. Ill pester maintinence first thing in the morn. Uzochi looked at the whole setup while I was preening (I was quite happy with my solution) and said "Way to go McGuyver" or something along those lines and I ended up giggling. Thats the second time I've been dubbed McGuyver. The first time was when I fixed a tv we found in the trash -(http://community.livejournal.com/human_vultures/1705.html#cutid1)

I'm inordinately proud of my water solution. ^^ Now if only I could find a good solution to my weevil infestation problem and we'd be in business. (I swear my appartment has it out for me lately for some reason.) Anyhow, bedtime for me now. I've been artsy, Ill post pictures of my artsyness tomorrow or sometime. ^^

EDIT: Fixed picture

I just ordered all new computers parts... I wanna go hide in a corner now. Spending large amounts of money, on something I'm NOT completely confident with and have little experience with (like building a computer when I've never done it before) no less, scares the shit out of me... And new computer was quite expensive. Granted, quite a bit less expensive than if I'd have bought a premade but still enough money to freak me out considerably.

Wish me luck ^^*****

Weee, I love snopes.com. I went from researching weather or not this post http://darkdragonseer.livejournal.com/3813.html was true (my coworker also sent that to me) since I find it hard to believe and want all my facts before I go harring off about it. I don't have all the story but so far from the look of it sadly is true (and fucking disgusting) but is still listed as undefined in snopes because they cant get all the facts straight either... http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/vargas.asp

On the lighter side of things heres some funnier stuff I found at snopes: True story- dead whale in Oregon blown up with a half ton of dynamite wrecks mans car. And a video of it to boot! *snicker* Good job Navy on advising them to explode a while. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGVkHl-nBhE

Moar Navy stupidity: http://www.snopes.com/critters/gnus/slink.asp

http://www.snopes.com/critters/gnus/squirrel.asp
And this one reminds me of a certain time a friend and I went to pick up a dead squirrel. When walking back to our car in a dark parking lot we noticed a creapy guy. I took out my keys in case he was more than a creepy guy. My friend asked why I was doing that (we'd driven her truck) and I told her about the guy. Her response? "I'm carrying a dead squirrel!" Have to agree. Beating someone with a rotting smelly dead squirrel probably works better than jabbing them with your keys. ^^

Walmart goes green?

When I was in my multimedia class (about a year ago or more) I did a report on Walmart. One of the most recent things where walmart was concerned was it's new CEO's declaration of a massive overhaul to make Walmart a more green company. More green products, reducing their fleets gas usage by 80% (or some crazy number like that), reducing said gas usage by buying from local farmers and businesses instead of shipping it from one source, fuckton of organic stuff at really low prices, etc. etc. The whole shoot'n match. It was a WONDERFUL idea. Theres no way in hell that massive global companies like Valdemart will go away nor is it feasible that the majority of people will cease to use them- so my not going to Valdemart doesn't make a difference to them at all, and probably the rest of the greenies like me that avoid it on our principles. They've still got a massive customer base thats unlikely to drop... However, this is a bonus when considered that as a massive company, any change they make will also be a massive one and have huge effects. For a company like that to go green (or even to add a slight amount of green to their building wide canvas of slate black) would have a large effect. But this IS The-Store-That-Must-Not-Be-Named so I was (still am) skeptical.

Fuck me sideways- they're actually implementing some of this. I avoid Valdemart like the plague but needed to take my recyclables to the center (which resides in the mega-Valdemart's parking lot) and I needed some potting soil for my tomato, mint, and squash (Hey, Fox, want some squash? My boss gave me two) so I went to Valdemart. Apparently its eco-month (or some shit like that... hey, I hold every month to be eco month, so to me eco-awareness month is kinda pointless but whatever...) and Valdemart is really pushing alot of eco products. Around the whole store there are kiosks pointing out green products and advice (like for example one had donald duck pajamas that were made from organic cotton or something like that.) It made me quite pleased.

I also ran across one product that I loved so much I had to get it (I needed some anyhow.) Its a product like called Pure & natural (www.pure-natural.com) and they sell namely soaps (hand soap and bottle soap and such.) Its a all-natural soap, hypo-allergenic, glycerin base, etc. etc. The usual stuff for a natural happy soap. What really made me squee was the fact that the packaging is biodegradeable and made 100% from post consumer waste- and has Baby's Breath seeds embedded in it. You don't recycle or throw away the packaging. You bury it in your garden, water it, and watch your plants grow. ^^ And to top it all off its a made in America product. I've not gotten to try it out yet (I'm still whittling down the soap I got from a friends wedding), but I'm hoping the product is as good as all the packaging. It smells pretty good though. I'm tickled pink ^^

I'm also wondering what else has been implemented that was not directly obvious to my eye (which was admittedly distracted and didn't notice anything but the glaringly obvious- like the huge signs for Eco-month '08 and the HUGE kiosks saying 'Green Friendly!') I'll have to do a news search later, I'm curious. And hopeful. For now tho, I wanna go to bed.

Oh, yeah, Foxylady, I'll be calling you tomorrow. ^^ I've got a question or two for ya. (nothing major, just an idea)

Moar from the "Funny spam titles" folder: "Girlfriends will drive crazy with you if you enlarge your arm"

I just finished reading the DNAngel manga (what there is of it) and damnit I want more! I hope wiki isn't mistaken or that Monthly Asuka doesn't drop the series or it fall through or something- Wiki had this to say "While the storyline has not yet ended, no new material has been released since the August 2005 issue of Monthly Asuka. The magazine announced in its March issue (released on January 24, 2008) that the manga would resume the next month in its April issue."

Im happy. ^^

Other than that, I've been working and sleeping. Sleeping ALOT. I seem to have caught a cold (read: ConFunk) and its beating me around the twist. Not enough to make me miss work, but enough to make me miserable. --*

Shinji Hirako, long hair and fifth division captain. Fuckwhat?! *looks like a cow smacked between the eyes with a mallet*

I need to read more. But need to download it from a better group. This one on one manga is pissing me off horribly. Somehow I dont think shinji saying "This is gonna be one hullava shindig. You was suppose' to wear somethin' swank and snappy" is a direct or even close translation. *fume*

I hate humanity. I've not changed much on that since high school. Throughout HS I hated having to admit I'm human. I STILL hate admitting that because I hate my fucking race so much and 7 years after HS I still have found very few redeeming features. And times like this make me hate humanity even more.

My baby birds I posted about two days ago are gone. I got home and found one dead on the balcony steps. I figured a blue jay did it, took the babe down and laid it in the grass to go back to the earth where he could decompose and and stuff without anyone stepping on him or play with him. I was kinda sad but shrugged cause thats life in the bird world. If another bird doesn't like you in its space taking up its food or being a possible threat or if they view your babes as quick easy defenseless snacks, they'll go for them. I figured a jay did that and got pelted by the mom and dropped the babe as it tried to scamper so I wondered how many chicks were left. Something felt wrong and there was no sign of a struggle, no feathers, no disturbed nest, no nothing. And especially no momma bird flushing and fleeing when I walked up to my door so when I took down the nest somehow I knew it'd be empty. It was.

My brother came out the door soon as I hung my plant back up at that moment and asked if I'd been out there for the past half hour walking back and forth. I told him I just came home. He said there'd been someone short walking back and forth on the balcony for a while and he finally came out to see what/who it was. I told him about the birds and it hit him that the kids that'd been playing around on my balcony did it. He said it was prolly the three kids that were running around outside. I went and asked the kids if they'd seen anyone on my balcony. They had. Two other kids, one a teen and one a little younger/shorter, had been on my balcony messing with my plants. I thought it may be these kids and they were lying to me but they weren't. There was no way these three could even reach my plant (I have to stretch to reach the plant and the kids were half my height or shorter.) I got a description of the two kids and I'm going to keep an eye out for them. Ill also report them to the complex (for all the good THAT will do me...) If I can I want to "have words" with their parents... If all else fails at least I can scare the shit out of the parents by threatening to report them to a game warden (?) for killing a species protected by the MBTA (I would LOVE to report them and see the parents get fined but somehow I don't think a game warden would be too fussed about some house finches. If it were raptors, yes. But not so much finches, especially without flat out proof these kids did it.) At least threatening the parents with legal action would scare them into punishing the kids and keeping them from doing this again or messing with peoples stuff on their balconies.

But I'm so pissed. I'm pissed at humanity for treating others like shit and treating the other living beings on this earth with such callous disregard. I'm pissed that parents don't teach their kids not to mess with other peoples stuff and pissed at them in equal measure for not teaching their kids respect for animals and the earth. (Hell, if they wanted to see baby birds they could knock on my door and ask, I'd have shown them, damnit!) This anthropocentrism people have makes me sick. I'm tired of watching people treat other beings like shit. Tired of going to stop on the side of the road to pull a turtle out of harms way, only to see a huge jacked up pickup truck veer off the road to hit the turtle, then have to drag the poor guy (STILL ALIVE), broken and bleeding so that I can see all his insides through his cracked open shell, off the side of the road far enough that when he dies at least a coon or vulture or dermestids can gain a meal from his death. I'm tired of seeing highschool kids trying to light a dogs tail on fire cause they think it'd be funny. I'm TIRED OF THIS BULLSHIT. Goddess, Gods, and all other beings but that I fucking hate humanity.

Weee found another Shinigami that is as cool as Bleach shinigami. (I'm not impressed with Deathnote Shinigami. Theyre just demon things. --*) I'm reading 07 Ghost and it's pretty interesting. So far I'm liking this shinigami Verloren and his messneger Kor and the art isn't bad at all. ^^ Also fun is the allusions to shonen ai in it. Funness ^^ Check out Kor ^^ http://www.onemanga.com/07_Ghost/4/ Much spiffyness.
AHH! WE HAS BABIES!

Theres a house finch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_finch) that made a nest in my hanging potted plant. She laid eggs a little less than two weeks ago and they hatched today! She laid 5 eggs and so far four have hatched. There so TINY and CUTE! I'm used to seeing ugly little wrinkled featherless things (baby birds when they're first hatched are rather ugly in a "its a baby bird squee!!!" kind of way- so not cute but very loveable. Well, 'cept for chickens. Baby chickens are cute fuzzballs oo*) and seeing these guys was a welcome shock. They had a white light fuzzy downy coat all over and tiny little beaks. Their eyes weren't open yet. I took pictures but my camera is crap. I may post them later. But, yeah, I'm tickled pink ^^

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: PLEASE READ

Hey guys, if you use AIM be warned. I got a message on AIM from a random person not on my list (looked like a bot or something) that said this: "your private friends-only posts have been stolen: http://stainedfeathers.on.nimp.org/?u=r4l" I figured it was a load of bull (really WEIRD bull given that my AIM and LJ have next to nothing to do with each other and I don't think bots can get my AIM off lj [Since it requires you to click the link on it]) so I looked more closely into it. In the AIM info for the person that sent it to me (had a bot name of writings882Mr) they had a link to someones LJ: http://dobernala.livejournal.com/ When looking at dobernala their lj looks like a bot or BS lj. I also noticed someone I knew from parrot_lovers apparently got the same message and came to the same blog (dobernala) so It worried me slightly. If you get any messages like this with a link in it (from me or anyone else), DONT CLICK IT. Im not sure what it is but I think its a porn link or it could be a virus link or something. Just thought I'd let you all know since this seems to be being passed around.

X-Posted Everywhere (Sorry about this! But I'm being overly cautious)

Finding you have a manga you didn't realize you had from one of your favorite series of all time (even if it is old and crappy but lovable) AND the translations to it is just freaking -awesome-. Was reading through an old site I still love but hasn't been updated in years (seriously, I was straining for the scant update when I was a freshman in college and that was seven years ago. Im surprised its still up and very grateful it is.) I ran across some of the stories in the Weiß Kreuz Arch one of which was "Ranjatai." It said Ranjatai was published in the Verbrechen and Strafe Animated Gakken Mook and my brain goes "huh, Verbrechen & Strafe... I have the artbook- OO!!!! It has a story at the back!" And sure enough its Ranjatai. ^^ I've been wanting the translation for a long time and it turns out I've had it and didn't know. Im happy. Weiß is still one of my favorite series despite it being slightly crappy and plotholy.

I re-found Aya no Weiß Kreuz corner again in hopes that it still had the translations for An Assassin and White Shaman 1&2 and luck favored me, it still does. Someone borrowed and never returned my copies (that I'd painstakingly translated to English) and never returned them. I've finally given up on their return and say they're stolen and have bid on another copy of both. I think I'll translate them because, damnit, it's still one of my absolute favorite mangas!

Anyhow, Wee update (kinda) time!

Now that I've ranted about Weiß, I should post updates. The major one? I got into the Texas A&M Masters of Science Visualization program! (Viz for short ^^) I'm thrilled kinda floored. I've been working toward this goal for years (7-8 + to be exact...) and now I don't know what to do with myself. I figure I'll find my feet again once I'm taking the classes and get back into the swing of things. At the moment it feels like I have no floor under my feet because the goal I've been working toward so long happened and now I don't know what to do. My other goal is still so far in the future its kinda etheral. oo* Its a distinctly odd feeling.

Aggiecon is in two weeks! *squee* I'm very much looking forward to this! Granted, I have been really lazy and done no work to put in the art show or the dealers table. I HAD some magnetic hematite bracelets to sell but my coworker bought them all from me for her daughters and her oO* Methinks I need to make more as well as finish these glass sconces that have been sitting on my damn desk for the past week and a half. I'm also debating on jumping a fad for some money. It irks me to do it but I get the feeling I could ask a good price- I'm going to make another stained glass wolf, but I think I might throw some wings on it and jump the "cats/wolves/etc with wings fluffy shit" fad. I think it'd sell and I could use the money since it seems mom and dad are going to be randomly swiping mine for the next few months. (How does that work? *sigh* I hope they at least pay my savings back to me by august. If I don't get loans or scholarships I'm going to need it...)
Also, i'm going to Rocky this time too instead of skipping out (as I usually do cause I've seen it too many times and am usually whipped by that time of night.) Turns out two of my coworkers want to go see it so its going to be a "Fosters goes to Rocky Horror!" night. ^^ S (Painter over at Fosters) is still trying to get R(boss) to come. R has seen and actually likes Rocky but we dunno if hes seen it live action. I'm very amused as this is the man that gives a (mostly mock) shocked look every time someone say a bad word or something perverted or insinuating and goes "There are young impressionable ears around here!" (Meaning me despite the fact that I cuss as bad as anyone around there. Well maybe less than M who has a penchant for the word fuck and I've taken to using the word freaking or fragging in an rather vain effort not to curse as much ^^*)

Oh yeah, Renji (my horse spine) is finally getting some more work done on her. Shes happy, though momentarily in pieces on my desk. Her first vertebra is done (I think. I may be adding some red to it) and I'm working on the second and third now. I think when I get all the black tattoos on her I'm going to go back in with some red and add some accents. It'll look good on her and make it pop. ^^ I shall post pics later.

Anyhow, Ill post more later as its 2 am and I need sleep. I REALLY hope I have a good dream this time as opposed to just weird or disconcerting ones. I'm starting to keep a list of them: Night before last it was something to do with a girl I was head over heels for (not irl, dreamgirl doesn't actually exist nor is anyone I know- thankfully) and trying to impress, the night after that it had something to do with Quint, someone who was a mix of Fox and someone else (really odd), and Kujo (Fox's old dog- even weirder). Last nights was about trying to lead (def.: to put in a leaded stained glass panel/window) deer antlers into a window- Not as in slice them or lead around the tines so its incorporated into the window, that'd be pretty cool actually. No, lead as in antlers sticking straight up and leading around the skull cap as if it were a piece of glass. Then it turned into me being at my apartment (which was a mix between my current place and Fox's old old apartment) and not having time to clean. Since I didn't have time to clean there was dirt and leaves and such all on the floor and Fox was pissed at me for making her sleep on a really dirty floor and she picked up an oak leave and waved it in my face as proof of how messy my place was while she railed at me. (Just as odd as trying to lead a deer skull cap and antlers into a window if you know Fox...) Then I fell asleep when i came from work and had another dream. This one was about Fox bringing snakes over to my apartment (which was cool) but letting them escape (no longer cool) and us hunting them down- well, me trying to trap and hunt them down because I was afraid I'd get in trouble with mom or Z (my brother) and that they'd hurt my bird. (Granted they were all non venomous with mouths that could hardly bite my bird, but still) Fox didn't care and I was panicking about it but her traps for the snakes worked and we got them back (after much paranoid looking under sofas) and turned out we caught 1 more snake than shed brought- apparently it'd come in from outside and it was a good thing we trapped the snakes cause it was a cotton mouth (that was shaped like a cornsnake). Seriously, WTF brain? I'm getting a little tired of these really -freaking- weird dreams. I don't mind ones with flying (which is a norm in my dreams- I'd think I was ill if I got around in any way other than flying in a dream) and I don't mind the weird ones with random characters in them. But these dreams with my friends or a mixture of my friends and coworkers and all of them completely out of character in them is -REALLY- starting to irk me. (Though, maybe I should be worried if they were in character? oO*)

Hopefully, no more odd dreams tonight.
