Once upon a time, there was a doll head that looked like This.

Then one of them met Mr. Exacto Knife, and it's eyes were opened. And it ended up looking like this. (Not my photo, I was too lazy to take before shots.) It went up for sale in that state, and seeing it I pounced as it'd be a great play head to practice mods with.

Obviously, I'm not finished yet, still much sanding and cleaning up to do. (The chin was kind of random, I just had some left over epoxy and decided he needed a manlier one. So there.)

His brow line might get reworked as well, to further the snarky expression. I'm thinking I'm going to attempt sculpting some cybernetic attachments or something too. Since he's already covered in epoxy, might as well run like hell with it eh? :3

I've also decided I am going to work more on Quay's mouth. Not for a little while yet, but eventually.

This is what happens when you have a Canadian resident for a moderator -- she gets bored on 4th of July and does insane things to her mailbox.

So I've been so insanely busy that I only realized today that in the month or so since I've brought home my green-cheek, Tane (pronounced "Tah-nay"), I haven't actually posted about him on here yet! And I always love reading and seeing everyone else's beebs, so I thought I'd join in the fun.

Hi all. The petstore kennel tech is back with another question. ;) And I'd like to thank everyone for all the good advice last time and especially for the glop recipe, all the birdies just love it.

Ok, so we got about a half-dozen cockatiels yesterday from a store in another city. They're all pretty much a mess (I have a few choice words I'd like to say to this store, for the record). Dirty feathers, irritated vents, that kind of thing. But one of them has a really weird deformity on his beak. I didn't have my camera yesterday or I'd have taken a picture. I tried to draw it in Paint, so bear with me:



That part sticking up like a snaggletooth is a weird, twisted growth coming out of the bottom half of his beak. The line going down his beak on the right side of the growth is an actual split in his beak. I think he's been trying to break seeds and crunch pellets, but the growth is messing him up and it's causing his beak to split. It looks like it's been an on-going thing, the split doesn't look fresh, like it cracked open yesterday or something. Which is why I have a serious problem with this store, because our invoice says all the tiels have been handfed, and this is definitely something they'd have noticed and chose to ignore. *rage*

I'm not sure what to do about it. Clearly he needs to go to the vet, but we don't have an avian vet in town, apparently. Is it something that will be easy for a regular general-practice vet to deal with, or are we in trouble here? :( He's not scrawny, he seems to be able to eat, he's just got a really messed up beak.

I brought home a little blue mask lovebird last night. I'd been holding out for a Fishers to be Gobbles companion, but they're next to impossible to find around here so I'd started looking for other eyerings. I'd been watching for rescues (eyering of any kind), but Gobbles is getting older, and I find myself needing to finish grad school earlier than I'd planned....that means taking 2x as many courses. Thankfully, the birds are in our home office, so I can let them out and keep an eye on them even while doing homework.

I found Giblets in a local pet store (good quality though I wish they would put their birds on pellets). Buying from a pet store....even a decent one...wasn't something I really wanting to do. However, I walked in to the store (hoping to find our cat litter that Petsmart has stopped carrying locally), I saw Gibblets. It weighed the pros and cons. The clincher was that I liked his temperament, and he's roughly Gobbles age (both are moulting).

He was the only eye ring lovebird with a few handfed PF lovebirds. Typical for them, they didn't want to hang around him (they seem only to bother with the eyering species if there isn't another PF around). He was alert and curious, though utterly uninterested in being touched. He's utterly flightless. It looks like he's growing new flight feathers and may have been over clipped, but it could be the moult. Giblets is in the worst part (Gobbles is finishing his moult). Giblets looks like Gobbles did a month ago.

So, now he's in quarantine. He's living in Gobbles' baby cage (a Hagen Vision cage I bought for weaning and travel), and he's terrified but starting to move around. He was on seed, so I've given him seed, pellets (three kinds), fruits, and veggies.

I was hoping he'd make the same sort of connections Gobbles makes (if something is scary to Gobbles, and I show him what it's for - like eating - he'll try it), so I let him see me playing with Gobbles. He looked very curious, then...and a little less scared but mostly he seemed interested in Gobbles.

It's funny, though. They're in the same room (our home office).....on opposite sides of the room. It puts them close enough to view but not close enough to spread anything. Gobbles is a little disturbed. He doesn't seem to know what Giblets is. I'd hoped to get him a friend BEFORE he became sure he was people, but he's still young (8 months).

I'm glad I bought the cage with two birds in mind. It's suitably sized.

EDIT: Thanks for the concern. I know quarantine should be done in a separate airspace. I've been keeping, breeding, and rescuing chinchillas for 13 years. I kept birds and worked in pet stores through college....until a personal crisis prompted me to rehome them. I really would like to go without additional comments concerning quarantine.

Ideally, I wouldn't have five return vents in a 1500 sq foot house with an open floor plan. The only space is upstairs, and the rooms are so close, they might as well be one big room. The third bedroom owned by a handful of chinchillas (it's too cold for birds, anyway...right below the blower). The downstairs is kitty central (and drafty).

I've been going around and around on this for awhile. Much thought went into the location of the cages in terms of the ventilation system. The risks to Gobbles are as minimized as I could make them. Giblets is down wind of Gobbles in terms of the air flow.
